The famous chase scene took three weeks to film but lasted ten minutes & fifty three screen seconds! The city denied permission to film on the Golden Gate Bridge but allowed unprecedented access to other parts of San Francisco.
McQueen made a point of keeping his head near the open car window throughout the chase so that audiences would be assured it was himself & not a stunt man who was driving.
Bullitt's reverse burnout during the chase scene wasn't scripted, McQueen mistakenly missed a turn!
