In 1993, an elite team of US Delta Force & Army Ranger soldiers were dropped into civil war-torn Mogadishu, Somalia. Their plan was to sneak in & kidnap two of the local crime lord’s top lieutenants.
However, shortly after the assault began, Somali militia & armed civilian fighters shot down two UH-60 Black Hawks with rocket propelled grenades.
The operation to rescue the chopper crews was planned to last no more than an hour, but the Americans, committed to recovering every man dead or alive, stayed in the area too long & were quickly surrounded by a large force of angry & heavily armed Somalis.
The outcome was an intense overnight firefight resulting in 18 dead & 80 wounded US troops & possibly hundreds dead on the Somali side.
