'If you think for one second, you go too slow & it's dangerous', so said Walter Röhrl the famous Group B rally driver. A WRC favourite throughout the 1970s & 80s, Röhrl's advantage was learning the pace notes by heart. He gave every corner a name; that was his secret, medium left, plus two hundred, flat right, he knew them all.
In 1984 he moved to Audi & the 4WD Quattro, produced in his home state of Bavaria & scored 14 WRC victories. In 1992 at the 24 Hours Nürburgring race which saw fog & heavy rain at night, he hardly slowed down, anticipating corners by timing & memory.
Max Mumbles says: 'Niki Lauda called Röhrl a genius on wheels.'
